At the risk of beating a dead horse, you're really going to be in for a bad time if you lose your smartphone. But, take heart – if you've lost your mobile lifeline, you have lots and lots of miserable company.
According to a new study from Lookout Mobile, an Internet security company making smartphone apps, $7 million worth of smartphones are lost every day, adding up to $30 billion worth in a year. When are those phones lost most frequently? The answer will not surprise you in the least.
Most smartphones are lost during major holidays or festivals, or between the hours of 9:00 P.M. and 2:00 A.M., for reasons that should be fairly clear. During New Year celebrations alone, $14 million worth of phones were lost, while $11 million worth were lost on Christmas, which is especially sad because you have to figure some of those lost phones were Christmas gifts. In those night hours between 9:00 P.M. and 2:00 A.M., a staggering two-thirds of all lost smartphones were separated from their owners, and I'm willing to bet my lunch money that staggering of a certain kind had a lot to do with that.
Philadelphia was singled out for being the most likely place to lose your phone, with survey respondents revealing that they lost their phone twice a year on average. However, the people of Manchester, England managed to secure the coveted title of the population most likely to lose their phones.
There's plenty more information where all that came from, so feel free to peruse the infographic at your leisure. And remember – keep your friends close, but keep your smartphone closer.
